At Sunday's BET Awards Nicki Minaj gave a jarring yet cryptic speech that she now wants to clarify. After telling us about a recent near-death experience, she went on to say, "When you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it." Throwing out the disclaimer "No shade," she added as she accepted her win for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, "I hope and pray that BET continues to honor authenticity."
Considering her recent Billboard chart success and being the only other female currently making noise in hip-hop, everyone thought Nicki was referring to white Australian rapperIggy Azalea, who was also a nominee in the category. But Nicki took to Twitter earlier today (Wednesday) to let us know that the perceived feud between her and Iggy is merely a product of the media’s sensationalism.
In a string of tweets she writes, "The media puts words in my mouth all the time and this is no different. I will always take a stance on women writing [because] I believe in us! I've congratulated Iggy on the success of 'Fancy,' publicly. She should be very proud of that. All the women nominated should b[e] proud. That will never change my desire to motivate women to write. Our voices have to be heard. I hope I inspire up & coming females to do that."
TeeRoy's 2 Cents:
- Nicki is full of crap. Of course she was reffing to Iggy. All that explaining made her seem like she was trying to cover up her shade.
- Usually when people say "no shade" they really are being shady.
- Iggy deserves her props. Nicki is just hating.
- As long as an artist can deliver, it shouldn't matter if they're "authentic" or of they write their own rhymes.
