Brian Ray Remakes "The Tears of a Clown" Featuring Smokey Robinson

Guitarist and singer/songwriter Brian Ray has worked with a long list of artists over the years, including Sir Paul McCartney as his lead, rhythm, and bass guitarist, in addition to work on his own solo career ... which brings fans to the release of his new single. Ray has remade Smokey Robinson & The Miracles' "The Tears of a Clown," featuring the one and only Smokey Robinson himself.

"The Tears of a Clown" was originally written by Hank Cosby, Smokey Robinson, and Stevie Wonder, released as a single in 1970 and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002. The song has also been included in Brian's live shows for years, and Ray and Robinson no strangers as the legendary musician's 1987 hit "One Heartbeat" was penned by Brian (the song was also the guitarist's previous single).

In a statement, Brian Ray explains the impact of "The Tears of a Clown" made on him and how the song is meant to celebrate Smokey Robinson. He says, "My arrangement of 'The Tears of a Clown' has been a staple of my live shows for years, as I’ve always been fascinated with the song, its lyrics and its impact on me as a kid. I was a big fan of Smokey’s ever since I first heard him singing through the earpiece of my new transistor radio as a kid, singing’ Shop Around."

He adds, "I feel privileged beyond words that Smokey offered to sing nearly 1/2 of the song with me on my new version of 'The Tears of a Clown.' This recording is my way of celebrating Smokey and to thank him for making my song, 'One Heartbeat,' a hit just as I was getting off drugs and alcohol at age 31."
