Daniel Radcliffe Gets Emotional Reading Great-Grandfather's Suicide Note

Daniel Radcliffe touched on an issue close to home in a new episode of BBC's Who Do You Think You Are?, where the star reportedly became emotional while reading his great-grandfather's suicide note.

For those who don't follow the actor, his great-grandfather Samuel Gershon's Hatton Garden jewelry store was robbed in 1936 and the authorities were not much of help. Because of the antisemitic landscape, the police claimed that Gershon faked the robbery to scheme insurance fraud and he couldn't face the bankruptcy, so he decided to take his own life. He was 42. As per The Sun, Radcliffe stepped back in time to reflect on his great-grandfather's pain while reading the note in the hour-long episode. "You want to just reach into the past and just go, 'Whatever you're going through, you have so much to offer the people who are around you still… you have so much to give to them. And, they still would all have loved you,'" Radcliffe reportedly said in the emotional episode after reading the note.

Later on in the appearance, the 29-year-old star, who is currently working on his new thriller film, Escape from Pretoria, also touched on the antisemitism of the time, calling the authorities' take so jarring. "There’s a lot to dig into in that one sentence. It's very jarring to see being a Jew to be taken as a piece of evidence in itself," he reportedly added. Radcliffe's episode of Who Do You Think You Are? is scheduled to air on July 22.
