It's Juneteenth!: A Celebration Of Freedom

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers, better known as 'the North' side in the Civil War, landed in Galveston, Texas, with the great news that the people who were enslaved were now granted freedom.

"Juneteenth" also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the state of Texas. This day now widely represents the emancipation of all enslaved African-Americans across the whole of the south.

The word is a blending of 'June' and 'nineteenth'.

In many of the early days of celebration, there were accounts of former slaves throwing their ragged clothes into rivers or burning them.
