Louisiana Court Won’t Review Life Sentence for Man Who Stole Hedge Clippers

She said his punishment does not fit the crime and his sentence resembles something from back in the day called, Pig Laws. Pig Laws were designed to re-enslave Black people.
  • A man convicted in 1997 for stealing hedge clippers was denied an appeal by the Louisiana Supreme Court.
  • He will continue to serve his life sentence.
  • The Chief Justice who is a Black woman was the only justice who opposed the Court's decision.
  • She said since the man was incarcerated in 1997 he has cost taxpayers in Louisiana approximately $518,667.
  • He is 60 years old and if he lives another 20 years it will cost taxpayers one million dollars.
